A midnight visit

My family lived out in the country when I was a kid.  Mom and Dad bought our property from an old couple in their 80s – Henry and Susie.  My grandparents were gone long before then and Henry and Susie were like the grandpa and grandma I never knew.
One night I woke up from a sound sleep (I was about 8 years old) and saw Henry standing in my room big as life.  He told me that he was fine and that he just wanted to say goodbye.  He also said he left something special for me at the house (his house).  Let me tell you, I was freaked out!  I ran into my sister’s room and crawled in bed with her.

The next morning my mom came up the stairs to tell us that Henry had died the night before.  We didn’t even know he was sick.  Susie called to say that she was coming over with a bible that Henry left for me.

We still have that bible and sometimes when I think of Henry I take it out of the bookcase, set it down and it opens on its own.  I scan through the passages and always find something in there that helps me find a way to solve a problem I’m dealing with.

I believe that Henry is kind of like a guide for me, finding a way to help me through problems I can’t fix on my own.
