It was 1979 and my roommates and I decided to celebrate our final post-collegiate days together catching up on the partying we’d had to give up to make it through finals. Someone came up with the great idea to hop a train to symbolize the exciting journey we were beginning … we might end up anywhere, but we’d take our first step together.
Getting off the train was actually a lot more challenging than getting on and we realized that this one wouldn’t slow down until it hit the next town 15-miles away. Our great idea was just a dumb college prank.
As the train neared town it started to slow and we decided to jump for it. We all made it with nothing but a few bumps and bruises, but our relief was short-lived when we noticed a Sheriff’s car idling nearby. As we were on our way to the station I kept trying to reach my sister telepathically. She’d get me out and save me the embarrassment of relating my newfound stupidity with my parents. Before the sergeant had even finished lecturing us my sister walked in.
We’ve been able to stay connected telepathically ever since and have never questioned our ability to know when the other has news to share.
