Palm Reader

It was late summer and the local fair was underway.  A bunch of my coworkers decided to go together for a free concert, some fair food and to see a local palm reader who usually set up a booth.  She was originally from Haiti and did readings for like $10.
We were all in our 40s and felt like schoolgirls lined up behind the teenagers looking for a clue to their true love.  She was really sweet with them, but we didn’t really pay attention to what she was saying, thinking it would be rude.

I let a friend of mine go first … she had recently separated from her husband and really wanted to get back together.  She was hoping that the palm reader would see something that would give her hope.  We were all shocked when the palm reader not only told her that her marriage was over for good, but to prepare herself for her husband’s death.  What?!  She said there was nothing she could do because it would happen at work and even if he changed jobs it would still come to pass.  She said it was his time.
None of us wanted a reading after that, but instead told her not to give it another thought.  It was just this lady’s attempt to get her to come into her shop for a really expensive reading.

About a year later I got a call from my friend (we weren’t working together any longer and I didn’t see her very much) telling me that her husband had been killed in a freak accident at his job.  Luckily she had spent the time between the reading and her husband’s death to iron out their differences so she didn’t have any unresolved issues hanging around.  Nonetheless, don’t look for answers to unspoken questions unless you’re ready to handle the consequences.
