A few years back my family was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my brother’s first child. It had been a difficult pregnancy for his wife and as she neared full term we were all on pins and needles.
Due to staffing problems I had to work a straight 36-hour shift and was barely able to put one foot in front of the other when I got home. My brother had been in my thoughts for the last few hours, but I knew he’d call if there was any news.
I had barely dropped off to sleep when I heard my brother’s panicked voice calling my name. I woke up and called to my husband to see if it was his voice I’d heard, but I knew in my heart that it wasn’t. As it turned out, he wasn’t even in the house.
Grabbing some clothes I threw together a bag of snacks and drinks (my brother’s diabetic and if his wife went into labor he’d be too shaken up to think of himself) and left for the hospital. I walked into emergency and asked if my sister-in-law had arrived. They checked with admitting and, sure enough, she was just getting settled into her room.
Turns out that her water had broken and they rushed off to the hospital. The only call they took the time to make was to her labor coach and my brother was so relieved that I was there. We had always been close and I told him that his voice woke me from a sound sleep. We’d shared telepathic communication before, and I didn’t doubt it this time.
