Developed by Karl Zener in the early 1930s, these cards are still used today to study and practice ESP and clairvoyance. The deck consists of five cards each of five different images: three wavy lines, a circle, a Greek cross, a star and a square.
In clairvoyance testing the cards are shuffled and the reader identifies the card before the tester observes and records the correct image on the card. In ESP testing the sender looks at the card and tries to mentally convey the image to the reader. The reader’s answer and the image are recorded and tabulated.
Readers are not notified whether their individual answers are correct in an effort to prevent card counting, which could increase the chances to successfully guess the remaining cards. Multiple tests are required to determine consistent results.
